We're all ready for a fresh color palette around the homestead. The deep reds and greens of Christmas have fulfilled their purpose but they are starting to get tired. With the darkest days behind us I prefer lighter colors in my vases as well. Something to remind myself that spring and sunshine is drawing closer every day.
White roses are a favorite in my vases and centerpieces this time of year. Sometimes I combine them with pale pinks and peach roses, but my favorite is to use them alone with a lacy-leafed filler such as bright green fern leaves. I've even added snowflake themed flower picks to the bouquet to tie them into a winter theme.
Another favorite that seems just a bit more sophisticated is the calla lily. Once again, the white color adds a clean, fresh look to the post-holiday, winter home. Unlike roses, I prefer these with broad-leafed deep green fillers. Calla lilies are especially beautiful when displayed in ceramic pitchers. My favorite is cream colored with light blue designs hand painted on it.
If you would like a bit more color, consider anemones. These delicate blossoms come in reds, pinks, lavenders and purples. I love a huge rounded bunch of these in vase with no filler. If you do want some greenery, select smaller, less obtrusive fillers so they don't overpower the small blossoms.
Last on my list is the stately yet playful orchid. Whether as a cut flower or a potted flowers, orchids provide plenty of exotic color to your home, well-suited to alleviate the winter doldrums. I prefer potted orchids, so no filler is necessary. If you do want a filler for cut orchids, consider some of the decorative floral twigs, since these give the bouquet a natural look and allow the flowers to shine.
